Nepal Telecom opens customer center.

March 28, 2013: Nepal Telecom- the government owned telecom operator and pioneer of all telecom technologies in Nepal, has started opening its customer center in Kathmandu. Now only for the distribution of WiMAX service (launched for general users this Wednesday), Nepal Telecom has used this sort of customer centers in Kathmandu to provide information about WiMAX and distribute Wimax CPE to customers. To start with, they have only four of such centers in Kathmandu located at the core part of the city (Kingsway, Putalisadak, Baneshwor and Kupondole) which will be later increased to 14. This is the first time Nepal Telecom has used customer center outside it's own office, to distribute their services.

It is also known that Nepal Telecom is planning to distribute their GSM, CDMA SIM cards through outsourcing from counters outside their offices. As Nepal Telecom is bringing out huge no. of lines in GSM and CDMA, they feel it would be hard to distribute huge no. of subscribers only from their office counters. But it is not clear whether the same customer centers opened now will be used for the distribution.

Ncell- the private telecom operator in GSM has already made a drive to open Ncell centers in all major parts of the country for the dissemination of information and services. Apart from such centers, Ncell even enables a simple stationary to distribute their SIM cards.

Here is a picture of a Nepal Telecom Customer Center, in Kingsway.

Nepal Telecom's revenue at 36 Billion.

Nepal Telecom- the government owned telecom operator says the total revenues is at NRs 36 Billion and 790 million in the Fiscal year 2068/69 B.S, which is 15 % up compared to the fiscal year 2067/68 B.S. The total profit (before tax) is around 15 Billion and 610 million NRs which after tax comes to 11 Billion and 600 Million NRs. Though the total revenue is increased as compared to 2067/68 FY, the total profit declines as 4 Billion NRs was separated for the License Renewal fee to be paid to NTA(Nepal Telecommunication Authority) for the huge sum NRs 20 Billion, to be paid in 8 Installments.

Nepal Telecom, gets such revenue mainly from voice telephony which is from various technologies like PSTN landline, GSM (Namaste) Prepaid and Post paid, CDMA (Sky phone) Pre Paid and Post Paid. The revenue from Internet services is also increasing as the total no. of internet subscription is boosting up quite significantly. Among the total service revenue of 32 Billion, GSM service alone  earned NRs 15 Billion. Nepal Telecom believes the revenue and profit to increase hugely in this fiscal year 2069/70 BS as many of its big projects will be launched within the year and even targets the Internet revenue to increase much heavily with the nationwide addition of WiMAX, EVDO and 3G/Edge .

Huge Data rates cut in NT Data services.

Nepal Telecom has published new tariff for all of its data services (Dial-up, ISDN, ADSL, WiMAX, GPRS and CDMA EVDO). Marking the day of World Telecommunication and Information society day on Jestha 3, 2070 (May 17, 2013), NT will implement the hugely cut tariff for the data services.
Unlimited Internet in NT WiMAX.
With the new data packages, NT will also be starting the Unlimited internet in their WiMAX service- the latest technology for the data services. Launched some months a ago for individual users, WiMAX had not quite picked up the data market which was previously assumed to grab hugely, mostly due to the limited package only. Now listening to the public demand for unlimited internet in WiMAX, NT comes up with such plan and it seems like this plan will get popular among Internet hungry customers. Two unlimited packages in WiMAX will be available for now- 256 Kbps and 2 Mbps of which 2 Mbps will only be provided to corporate offices only. 256 kbps WiMAX costs Rs 1500 and there will be additional 30 percent discount for the first three month and 2 Mbps costs Rs 9,300.
Other packages are
  • unlimited dial-up package for Rs 200/month with Rs 100 per month for night surfing only.
  • Unlimited Package: 64 kbps = Rs. 200/month, 128 kbps = Rs. 400/ month
  • 40 percent data volume bonus to ADSL and WiMAX volume packages with the purchase of 3 months package of above.
  • 50 paisa per 1 MB data package in CDMA EVDO.
  • 3G/EVDO Volume based packages are:
Data Volume               Tariff (Rs)              Validity Period.
                   25 MB                         11                           1 day
                300 MB                        130                         15 days
                500 MB                        200                           1 month
                    2 GB                         760                           1 month
                    5 GB                      1,700                           1 month
                  10 GB                      2,400                           1 month

With the above tariff rates, NT intends to give wide range of data packages for different kinds of services and it seems like this latest tariff (fulfilling the customer real demand) will increase the data usage of NT Internet services.

NT increases prepaid recharge validity period.

June 19: Nepal telecom increases the validity period of top ups for prepaid mobile from Wednesday. As specified earlier, NT implements the extension of prepaid mobile top ups after being approved by the company board. Previous news only included the addition of validity period for the top ups available through recharge cards which had the duration almost doubled, but the latest statement from the operator says the validity period is also applicable to Pinless top up (MPOS). Now the recharge of the least amount Rs 10 increases the validity by 5 days, up from a single day, whereas the recharge of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 extends the validity to  360 days and 730 days respectively.
Here is the list of increase in validity period for all the recharge amount.

NT's offer for EVDO- 3G CDMA: Fastest Internet in Nepal.

Nepal Telecom has brought a new offer for its EVDO service- 3G CDMA technology which is branded as SKY PRO: Fastest Internet so far in Nepal. With the new offer, customer will be getting 5 GB data package for Rs 2459 (inclusive of tax)plus free EVDO dongle with 1 GB Memory card that can be expandable with SD card up to 32 Gb and Rs 100 free talk time. Currently the 5 GB data package is told to be valid for a month which will be increased to 3 months shortly. Till now, Nepal Telecom's EVDO is available in all metro cities, growing cities, major highways, almost all district headquarters, and the coverage is being extended to all parts of the country.

EVDO is a CDMA based 3G technology that can provide wireless broadband internet up to 3.1 Mbps downlink and 1.8 Mbps uplink with Rev A version whereas old version Rel 0 provides 2.4 Mbps downlink and 153 Kbps uplink. As EVDO Rel 0 has significantly slower uplink speeds as compared to EVDO Rev A, customers having USB dongle of Rel 0 EVDO are getting lower uplink speed and they complain about the network problem but it's actually due to the EVDO version that the dongle is compatible with. So, for the people who are going to get a EVDO USB dongle, make sure it supports EVDO Rev A for better download and upload speeds.

Cost of Wimax CPE in Nepal.

March 29, 2013: WiMAX- Latest Internet technology in Nepal, created hype in people for the Internet service to be ubiquitous and cheap but the need to have extra WiMAX device for the computer which is not that cheap, made people hesitant to buy the service.  Some even claim that being a government owned company, Nepal Telecom services always lag good support, another reason for people restiveness. Though the service sale is taking its pace, there are some thing that people need to understand. For the price of the WiMAX device (CPE), NT has made an Introductory offer of 50 percent discount in the packages for 3 month subscription to make up for the high initial cost of the CPE/modem. Another thing is they have outsourced the device selling and support to a private firm which is responsible for selling, configuring the WiMAX CPE and support for different problems from Nepal Telecom Customer center opened in core parts of the city and being extended to other parts as well.
Currently there are three different types of CPE- Outdoor CPE, Indoor CPE and USB dongle. NT tells its customer that Outdoor CPE can work in 15 km from the Wimax tower, whereas Indoor CPE and USB dongle works for just 5 km and 2 km distance from the WiMAX Base station.

If you have already bought and used the WiMAX service, please feel free to write your feedback below in the comment box.
Here is the price of the device shown in the picture below. Click to enlarge.

July 11, 2013: Nepal Telecom's latest offer for its EVDO service which they claim to be the fastest internet in Nepal, is gaining popularity among subscribers. Branded as Sky PRO, EVDO is a 3G CDMA technology providing max speeds of 3.1 Mbps download and 1.8 Mbps upload. With the offer, customer gets 5GB data plus EVDO USB dongle (with 1 GB memory space to use as a pen drive) and Rs 100 free talk time for Rs 2459(inclusive of taxes). NT swapping GSM network in Kathmandu from July 24 (Wednesday).

July 23, 2013:

Nepal Telecom- the pioneer telcom in our country, is starting the GSM network swap from July 24 (Wednesday). With the swap, the existing ZTE network will be changed to Huawei by 4.8 Million GSM project (Package B of 10 Million GSM Project) that is designated for the whole of Kathmandu and Western Development Region (WDR). NT is commencing the swap work from Kirtipur, the southern part of Kathmandu and they believe everything in its place to have a well managed swap. From Kirtipur, they will be operating Huawei BTS towards Kathmandu and Lalitpur which takes around two to three weeks to complete. Implementing the Huawei Network, it is told that Nepal Telecom will be upgrading the data speed in internet (3G) along with good quality Voice for which NT and Huawei Engineers are working hard.

What to do if you encounter any problem during the upgrade?

It is also known that there may be some problem during the swap time. For that, customers need to switch off/On at least once and wait patiently for sometime, but NT requests them to contact their mobile customer center (1498) if the problem persists for long.

What to expect from new Network?

Once the old network gets swapped by a new network, customers will be getting high capacity, good quality GSM network and the best part is they will be having a good 3G network all over Kathmandu for high speed Internet. As there will be some problems during the swap, it is told that NT and Huawei engineers will be working hard to solve such problems a.s.a.p. With the Swap, NT expects to provide better call quality and high speed Internet (3G) in Kathmandu.
